Psychological Procrastination

We’re all familiar with procrastination. “I know I should do it today, but… I’ll do it next week.” But as I was praying, I came up with a term that described the way I feel many times: “psychological procrastination”. This is where you’re at church, or at home, and you begin to think about getting closer to the Lord, or you’re wanting to have a more passionate faith. But then you think within yourself, “I’m not really feeling it right now. I will get closer to the Lord, but just not today. Maybe next week I’ll get something out of church or the sermon.”

And it goes on week after week – a whole year goes by and you’re thinking, “Where has the time gone? My life needs to go to another level!” Here’s the kicker though. We get excited for a day, or week at most, but then gradually decline into our typical ‘mode’, whatever that happens to be for you. But there needs to be a way to really break free from this “psychological procrastination”, so that a change can really take place, and that fruit would follow.

Maybe it’s just being aware that psychological procrastination is taking place, is the first step to change.

Freedom from OCD

Light and Truth must function together. One without the other, causes great frustration.

Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle. [Ps. 42:3]

Trichotillomania (Hair-pulling disorder)

I recently watched an episode of A&E’s, Obsessed. One gal, who seemed like she had everything going for her: Healthy, pretty, employed, has her own apartment; and yet she has a very dark secret that no one knows about. She pulls her own hair out from 3-to-4 hours a nite, and as a result he has over 40 sets of wigs that she wears. There’s an inner frustration that’s festering, and causing self-mutilation. (Here’s where Light and Truth are not functioning together.) Why? Because, in this show, when asked why she does it, she said, “I just want to be beautiful, and have normal hair.” Doesn’t sound logical, does it?

Because if she wants to be beautiful, and have normal hair, why doesn’t she just stop pulling out her hair, you ask? Because Truth is missing. See, the enemy of all life is, Satan; and he speaks lies to people in order to destroy their life, and to ultimately cause them to self-destruct. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”. The devil was speaking to her… “You’re ugly, you’ll never be pretty enough, why not pull out some of your hair, and I’ll make you feel better inside.” But if Jesus where allowed to come in and speak to her, it might sound something like this…

“My daughter, you are so beautiful, I understand the pain you feel inside, that most of the time you feel inferior, and want to be different. But I want you to know that you are already beautiful in My eyes, and that you too must also see yourself the way I see you, and not allow yourself to be rules by the external, but rather by the internal. Come, my beloved, tell me what’s on your mind right now, and I will remove the pain and frustration, and cause you to overcome this in your life.”

See, as the Light and the Truth are allowed into the human spirit, they lead us to the place where God’s presence dwells. Because it’s only in this place that you and I will find comfort, freedom, and a release from the strongholds that seek to strangle our lives.

If you’re experiencing different obsessions, like this gal, you can be free. If you’re experiencing any other stronghold such as these, you can be free: OCD, Cutting, Bulimia, Anorexia, Drug use, Alcoholism, Nail-biting, Anger, Depression, Fears, Phobias, Overeating, Anxiety, Stress, Panic Attacks. If you have any of these things in your life, or something similar, I want you to pray this prayer out loud:

“Jesus, I believe that You are the Truth. So, I’m asking You right now, to send out Your Light and Your Truth. Let them function as one in my heart and mind. Bring me close to Your heart, I need to be released from my stronghold __________________________ (say it out loud) by Your power. Set me free right now, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

If you’ve prayed that prayer, you have just taken the first step in your freedom. But remember how Light and Truth function together? Now, you need to begin re-programming your mind through the reading of God’s Word, The Bible, so that you can understand who you are in God’s eyes, and so that you can begin to really know who God is. Post a comment if you’d like, and I will do my best to help in any way I can. May you experience total transformation, and live the best life you can!

The Right Telescope

In Maui, we now have the world’s largest digital camera, (located on top of Mt. Haleakala, of course). It’s ability to capture the span of 40 moons across the canvas of outer space – is amazing indeed. But the main function of this camera is not mere “star gazing”, no, it’s used to watching out for meteors that could potentially “rock our world”. (Remember the movie, “Armageddon”?)

”Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” [John 13:1]

On the night Jesus was to be betrayed, He took His disciples to a place called: “loving them to the end.” And when you see a person loving his dearest friends to the very end his life, what does that look like? The phrase, “…to the end has it’s origin in the greek: telos, from which we get the word, Telescope. Jesus was absolutely focused and zeroed-in on demonstrating His love for His disciples.

When you look up to the God of the universe, what do you see? What are you expecting? Many people actually think of God as One who is dropping “meteors of trials” down on them, as if He is the “Cosmic Kill-Joy” of the universe. Others are always expecting the worse thing will happen, and that “…Oh, God probably doesn’t love me, because of all the bad things I’ve done….” But, here’s the thing, when you look through telescope of God’s Word [James 1:22-25], you’ll see that what is on the horizon for your life are… the multitude of mercies and love drops from Heaven, because of the great love of a great God. And just like Jesus loved those disciples of His to very end, in the same way He will love you and I – right up to the very end. Aren’t you glad for a Saviour like this?!

Pray This Prayer
“Lord, this morning I want to thank You for Your great Love for me. I know at times I deserve a meteor of judgement, but I ask for mercy and for grace to be extended from the scepter of Your Throne. I receive Your unconditional, agape love over my life and right now, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

“They’re Coming!!”

therecoming

We used to play a game as little kids, and we’d shout out, “The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!!” And then we’d all run around frantically like we were coming under attack.

“…And they came to Him from every direction.” [Mark 1:45]

No matter who you are, or where you came from, you too can come to Jesus! You might think you’re not good enough, but others just like you are coming to Jesus! They’re coming! They’re coming!! Will you be one of them? If you think He won’t accept you – you’re wrong. If you think He won’t forgive you – you’re mistaken. If you think that Jesus won’t help you – you’re dead-wrong! Your mindset might make YOU not come to Jesus, but others all over the world are pushing aside their inhibitions, excuses, old, ugly sins and they’re doing whatever they can to get to Jesus. How about you? Are you “up”, “down”, “sideways”, or “upside-down”? No matter where you’re at – Jesus will receive you unto Himself. For even Jesus Himself makes you this incredible, “money-back-guarantee”…. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37]. Do it today. Let Jesus say of you: “Look! Look! He’s coming to Me! She’s coming to Me!! I can’t wait to pour My Love out!!” Don’t put it off one more moment. You’ll never be the same again!

“Buyer’s Remorse?”

This Devotional takes about half-hour to do. It works individually or in a small group setting. What are we waiting for? Let’s get it started in here!!

Open-up your Bible to: Luke 10:38-42

“But Martha was distracted…” — Luke 10:40a

One of the most incredible privileges that we’ve all received from God is the ability to choose. Have you ever walked into a department store looking for just the perfect outfit? [Us, guys might just pick out a shirt, but definitely not an “outfit”.] But have you ever experienced something that’s called, “Buyers Remorse”? Buyers Remorse is when you spend so much time deciding what to buy, but once you brought it home you realized that it’s not really what you wanted, and you feel miserable. Believe it or not – it’s the same way in the spiritual realm. Many times we find ourselves going through this same exact experience when we choose the wrong thing. Ever been there? I know I have.

:: Pastor Robb’s Thought-Provoking Questions ::

1. Have you ever experienced “Buyers Remorse”? If so, what did you buy?

2. Pastor Ray Berryhill said, “Busy is not better, choosing better is better.” Why is being busy sometimes not such a good thing?

3. What are some of the patterns of busyness that sometimes we find ourselves in?

4.Practically speaking – What are some of the things you do to refuel, relax, and get re-energized?

CHAOS IS TAKING OVER!!

At times it can seem like chaos is reigning.

– Parents are getting out of control
– Local drug dealers are busy polluting Society
– Your best friend just talked behind your back
– Brothers & sisters are driving you crazy
– “There’s no food in the fridge!”
– …and “Why doesn’t anybody CARE!!!???”

Always remember that when it’s super crazy all around you – it doesn’t have to GET IN you. The storm might be raging all around you, but it doesn’t need to get all up ON you! Jesus is your Strong Tower – Run to Him and you’ll be safe. It’s the smartest move you’ll ever make.

How To Hear The Voice of God

Here’s 3 practical steps in hearing the Voice of God that have helped me greatly, and may pave the way for you to begin to hear God’s voice.

With so many things going on today someone might say, “Is it even possible to hear the voice of God?” God is speaking today. The real question is, “Are you listening?” Today we are literally bombarded with radio, TV, computers, video games, screaming kids, and traffic ⎯⎯ just to name a few. Sometimes we feel like if we could just get away we would be able to get our head cleared and really become more spiritual. And you know what? You’re right. But most of us can’t take a 3 month vacation and be a monk on a mountain somewhere. But there is a way for us live-out our faith on a daily basis so that our relationship with God will benefit us.

1. Carve-Out Time in Your Schedule to Wait on God.
Think of what you find yourself saying so often, “I just don’t have time.” That’s why you need to set a priority on making time to spend with God. Go to bed an hour earlier, and set your alarm an hour earlier. Start there.

2. Go to a Quiet Place.
This is so important. As long as kids are screaming and phones are ringing you wont be able to hear the voice of God. Think of it, you’re wanting to hear the voice of the Eternal God! Don’t take it lightly. Position yourself.
Think of the times God spoke in the Bible. Moses was all by himself on a mountain. So, plan your time and then get to a place where you won’t be distracted.

3. Quite Your Heart to Listen
Make sure there is no unconfessed sin in your life. Ask God to speak to you. Whatever you hear, make sure that it doesn’t contradict God’s Word, for God will never contradict Himself. Write down what you are sensing Him saying to you. If you’re not sure about what you’re heard, find a mature believer or Pastor to check it. Because the Bible says that there are many voices that speak. This will give you confidence, and will add to your faith, that you are in fact hearing the voice of God.

Applying these 3 easy steps will get you on the road to hearing the voice of God. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to let me know.
