Jump-out of your Helicopter

Recently I watching the movie, “The Guardian”, with Kevin Costner. He plays the role of Ben Randall, who served in the Coast Guard as a Rescue Swimmer. Jumping out of a roaring helicopter, he risks his life on many occasions – just to save a life. This brave man put his life on the line as he enter sub-freezing waters to swim to those how have been shipwrecked. There’s such a spiritual parallel here in this verse.

“A true witness delivers souls, but a deceitful witness speaks lies.” [Prov. 14:25]

The word, “delivers”, in the original language is literally: Snatches away, strips, plunders, rescues, recovers, and saves. Would Ben Randall, (played by Kevin Costner), really be a “true witness” of the U.S. Coast Guard if he didn’t jump out that helicopter, to go after that one, who was perishing? Of course not! He would be reprimanded, or kicked-out of the Coast Guard! We would say of such a one, “If you’re not going to do your job, what in the world are you even doing in the Coast Guard!?”

If you and I are called, “sons” and “daughters” of the Savior of the world, are we really being “true witnesses” of what we are called to represent? Because a “true witness” delivers, recovers, and saves souls. Could it be that one of the reasons why most Christians aren’t saving souls is because we aren’t fully walking in “truth”? Could it be that there is some deceitfulness (ouch) taking place in our lives? Could it be that we’re actually deceiving ourselves by thinking that we’re OK? I think we, as Christians, need to have some arctic cold water poured into our warm beds of Christian comfort, so that we might “awake to righteousness” (1 Cor. 15:34), and to begin jumping out of our comfortable helicopters, and begin to get busy with the business of rescuing the drowning souls around us. If we don’t, we’ll prove ourselves to be “deceitful witnesses”, just coming to Church, singing songs, while the world around us plunges to their eternal death. Are you a “deceitful witness”, or a “true witness”? No matter where you’re at today, you can change which type of “witness” you are! Maybe you’d even like to pray this – rededicating yourself to the task of rescuing souls.

“Lord, I come to you today to say, I’m sorry for not taking my job description as a “true witness” more seriously. People are drowning all around me, and I don’t seem to be as concerned as I ought to be. Yes, I’m praying for them, but (like Kevin Costner), I want to jump out of the comfortable “helicopter” of my familiarity, and begin to take the plunge into the icy water where the lost are at. Please, help me Lord, to be faithfully obedient to you – so I will prove to be Your true witness. I ask these things in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

“Tell The World That!”

With 30 Youth, and in only 50 minutes – Over 7 souls came to Christ today at our “Tell The World That!” mini Outreach at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Mall!!

I shared a message on Evangelism today in Summer Surge, just before we left.

The 3 points were:

1. LEARN TO SEE PEOPLE THE WAY JESUS DID. Matt. 9:35-38

2. TAKE THE BATON! John 20:21-22

3. WALK WITH AUTHORITY! Matthew 28:16-20

What was funny is that (when I got to my 2nd point) one of the girls said she got hit on the head with a Baton just a couple weeks ago. And don’t you know that God’s people don’t respond well to being hit on the head to evangelize. Jesus said, “Feed my sheep”, not: “Beat my sheep”! But, (here’s the thing), if we’ll reach out & accept the baton from the strong hand of our Shepherd – as His eyes blaze with the fire of His love, we will gladly do whatsoever our King so desires of us. Why? Because the sharing of our faith will then be motivated by His Love; and we will see incredible results.

One Word on a Ceiling?

I remember hearing the late John Lennon tell a story where he was at an art show. One Word on Ceiling

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” [John 1:14 KJV]

There was a ladder in the center of the room with a small magnifying glass attached to the ceiling with a string. He thought, “If this is something stupid, I’m leaving.” When he climbed up, he reached the ceiling and looked through the magnifying glass. There was only one word – “Yes!” It put a smile on his face, and he stayed for the whole art show. That one word, not only “dwelt” there, but it caused many to behold it’s “glory”, and were changed for the better!

Whatever I get from the Word of God, and my relationship with Him , it must become “flesh”. Why? So that people can relate to it, and desire to grab on to it! Titus Coan, of the Great Awakening in Hawaii, always sought to exemplify, and embody this verse to the precious Hawaiian people that God sent him to. Sadly, many times, people don’t come to the Church’s “art shows”. We don’t even set up a small “ladder” with something to catch the curiosity of the sinner. No, we build skyscrapers, and occasionally dangle a rope out of the penthouse window. And we wonder why people think Christianity is stupid? It’s time for the Church to wake-up and follow the model of Jesus! Let us dust ourselves off from our intellectual high-horses, and simply become a people who reach out to sinners with that tangible, life-changing love of God. Why? Because we want them to stay for the whole show, and make it to Heaven!

Why is the “Passion-Level” so low?

JW-WPI was a little shocked to see a new application in the iTunes store for iPhone called, “My Time”. It’s an application that is specially designed for Jehovah’s Witnesses. To me, it’s amazing, that while most Christians are wondering how to do just the “bare minimum” – to just (some how) slide into Heaven, here’ comes the Mormons & JW’s! These people are passionate for what they believe in. While Christians are wasting time, goofing around with downloads like iFart, the JW’s are utilizing technology to evangelize their Watchtower paraphernalia. While you’re drooling on your pillow, just remember this: The Devil never sleeps.

The late (and Great) Dr. Walter Martin used to say,

“Are you willing to do for the truth what the cults do for a lie?”

When I first heard that I thought, “God, am I supposed to be going door-to-door for You?” But the real question needs to be, “God, am I just as passionate for You as the Mormons, JW’s, and the…… Marathon Runners, the new Business Owner, the XBOX 360 Enthusiast?” If not, there really is a problem.

Why is the “Passion-Level” so low these days in most Christians?

Evangelize or Fossilize

So many people get bored in Church. Why? Well, here’s one hypothesis: Because we never invite anyone to Church! Isn’t that true? We think the problem is with the preacher, with the people, with the uncomfortable pew we’re sitting on, but noooooooo… “the problem couldn’t be with us.” But it is. We’ve become a fossil, and the Church has become our “museum”. The only person we’re concerned about is ourselves. [Ouch]. But if we’d take a pro-active stance to evangelize and hand out invites for our Church when we’re at the grocery store, gas station then maybe “Church” wouldn’t be so “boring”.

How about inviting that co-worker to Church? I know, I know… you asked them before, right? But that was a year ago! No doubt the Holy Spirit has been working in their life, so it’s time to ask them again. Go for it, and see if it doesn’t make “Church” more exciting. Because when your friend finally comes, and find the Lord, you will be ecstatic!

How Do You See Yourself?

Tonite it seemed like I heard the Holy Spirit say, “If you would see yourself according to the Word of God, you would never be the same.” I thought how that so often I merely see myself according to the flesh. I mean really, we look at ourselves everyday in the mirror several times a day. There’s no escaping… you! But in the Word of God there is a completely different picture that is told of the believer. They’re forgiven, new, empowered, endowed with gifts, etc. We’re really different people according to the Word of God, and yet we live in a state of ignorance most of the time. One of my missionary heroes, David Hogan said in one of his messages,

“Do you realize who I am? I am a conduit of power to the people God sent me to!”

How do you see yourself? Has it helped you, or hindered you? It’s time for you to rise above the funk, and starting taking control of your emotions, and begin living the life that God gave you!
