This passage paints a vivid picture in my mind of a soldier who is doing his own thing. While others have their uniforms starched and pressed, ready for the day, I see another soldier who is wearing his bermuda shorts and aloha shirt – totally not ready for service, battle, or even the daily line-up before the commander.
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning.” [Acts 24:5 NIV]
Could it be he has a lamp that’s been neglected and snuffed-out from sin, and thus his sloppiness doesn’t really seem to matter? Jesus isn’t offering a mere suggestion in verse 35, it’s a command! I can just see the commander’s veins popping out from his neck as he shouts to his troops… “BE dressed! Keep your lamps BURNING!”
I wonder what most of us look like in the spiritual-realm? Are we beach bums or battle ready soldiers? The New King James version says, “Let your waist be girded…”. Could it be that we’re so self-absorbed, self-conscious, self-centered, all because we’re walking around with our spiritual pants around our ankles? Our lives must be girded with truth like a soldier’s belt. Can you imagine worshipping Jesus – Sunday morning at your Church – and having your pants down around your ankles? We wouldn’t be worshipping, we’d be worrying! It time to get clothed in Christ [Gal. 3:27] first thing in the morning. It’s time to get into the Word of God [Ps. 119:105], and allow it to get our hearts burning once again for the things of God! Don’t settle for a mediocre life when God has so much more! Christ is coming, and we must be battle ready.
We used to play a game as little kids, and we’d shout out, “The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!!” And then we’d all run around frantically like we were coming under attack.
“…And they came to Him from every direction.” [Mark 1:45]
No matter who you are, or where you came from, you too can come to Jesus! You might think you’re not good enough, but others just like you are coming to Jesus! They’re coming! They’re coming!! Will you be one of them? If you think He won’t accept you – you’re wrong. If you think He won’t forgive you – you’re mistaken. If you think that Jesus won’t help you – you’re dead-wrong! Your mindset might make YOU not come to Jesus, but others all over the world are pushing aside their inhibitions, excuses, old, ugly sins and they’re doing whatever they can to get to Jesus. How about you? Are you “up”, “down”, “sideways”, or “upside-down”? No matter where you’re at – Jesus will receive you unto Himself. For even Jesus Himself makes you this incredible, “money-back-guarantee”…. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37]. Do it today. Let Jesus say of you: “Look! Look! He’s coming to Me! She’s coming to Me!! I can’t wait to pour My Love out!!” Don’t put it off one more moment. You’ll never be the same again!
How stupid can you get? Police said a man was arrested after he used a cigarette lighter while trying to siphon gasoline from a van. The man, who was visiting friends, went to drive home early Saturday but realized that he didn’t have enough gas in his SUV.
Police said the man tried to siphon the gas with help from another woman, but he couldn’t see how much gas was in the container, so he used the lighter to check. A blast of fire burned his hands and caused nearby residents to call police.
Police said he and the woman were located later in a store parking lot. He was arrested for theft and negligent use of burning materials.
The woman was referred to authorities for being party to theft. Formal charges haven’t been filed.
[And you thought you had problems…] Maryland – Arguments began Monday in a federal lawsuit alleging that a Maryland doctor stapled a man’s rectum shut during an operation, rendering him unable to move his bowels for 17 days, the Baltimore Examiner reported.
Ronald Watkins, 64, of West Virginia, has accused Dr. Manuel Casiano, a doctor in Frederick County, Maryland for botching a September 2004 surgery that left him with permanent bowel problems, according to the report.
A 16-year-old teenager is recovering after falling and impaling himself on a set of deer antlers in Carter Lake, Iowa. Todd Reynolds’ grandmother said the teen was climbing through a window in her home Wednesday after locking himself out when he fell onto the antlers.
The antlers stabbed him in the back and just missed his spine.
The grandmother, Jeanne Reynolds, said the antlers were on the floor. She had saved them from a deer that her car crashed into some years ago.
Emergency room doctors removed the antlers Wednesday. The teen was out of the hospital and expected him to recover.
I just heard about this. It’s a 9 minute video of Mike Guglielmucci’s Apology.
I’d like to hear your thoughts of what you think of it.
I just got done watching Lockup. You know, that show where they go inside maximum security prisons. Call me strange, but those shows are just so interesting to me. There was a certain man in there who belonged to a gang. They asked him why he would commit such violent acts – even right there in prison, and he said, “I’m a good soldier”. As I sat there sitting with my “Christian Self” I thought, “how can this criminal have such faithfulness and loyalty to his gang, and yet for most “Christians”… we don’t understand these terms of allegience to God?”
And yet I get the feeling from most believers that they are yawning their way through life… “Jesus is Lord, I’m bored, and who on the Olympics scored?”
Do we have a “Burger King Christianity” where we have to have it our way, and that without our “Happy Meal” of nice ear-scratching on Sunday morning we’re going to pout and backslide from the Faith? What kind of fantasy world are we living in? Daniel of old was faithful, innocent, bold, and courageous. He turned the tide of an entire empire by the character he obtained in his prayer closet.
We could learn a lesson from Daniel and these rugged, milltant prisoners who are willing to lay their life on the line at any given time.
“Lord, help us.”
